Fabrics for a Classic Shirt – Ideas and Inspiration
Share
Who doesn't need a classic shirt in their wardrobe? I love shirts – both to sew and to wear. Depending on the fabric and styling, they can look casual or elegant and are suitable for an incredible number of occasions. For me, they are true all-rounders in the wardrobe.
If you want to sew a shirt yourself, the choice of fabric plays a big role. A classic shirt pattern with a collar, placket, cuffs and other beautiful details comes into its own particularly well if the fabric has enough structure to work out these details neatly.
My favorite pattern for a classic shirt
One of my favorite shirt patterns is the Jenna Shirt by Closet Core Patterns. It combines classic shirt details with a modern, slightly oversized silhouette – and it's also really fun to sew.

Here you can see one of my Jenna Shirts. For this version, I used our beautiful cotton chambray from mind the MAKER.
The classic navy/indigo tone gets something very special from the small colorful specks. The fabric is wonderful to work with and is very suitable for a classic shirt pattern. The finished shirt looks high-quality and can be combined casually as well as a bit more chic.

Which fabric is suitable for a shirt?
For a classic shirt, woven fabrics that are easy to work with and have enough structure for collars, plackets and cuffs are particularly suitable.
Cotton is of course a classic for this. Depending on the desired result, chambray, light jacquard fabrics, cotton blends or other fabrics with some body can also be used.
For the transitional period between summer and autumn, I have selected some fabrics from my range that I can imagine being particularly beautiful as a classic shirt.
Cotton with jacquard stripes
This cotton fabric with jacquard stripes is at the top of my own sewing list. The combination of navy and pink looks modern and timeless at the same time, and the fabric has a wonderfully smooth, pleasant surface.
I can imagine it very well for a classic shirt with a collar and placket – a fabric that makes even a rather simple shirt pattern look special.

Romantic Landscape Cotton by Atelier Jupe
I love the colors of this Romantic Landscape cotton fabric by Atelier Jupe. For me, they fit wonderfully into the transitional period and immediately bring something autumnal to the wardrobe.
The cotton has a nice weight for a classic shirt and the special motif turns a simple cut into a real statement piece. Combined with jeans or simple trousers, I could imagine a shirt that you would love to pull out of the closet again and again.

Light cotton jacquard with flowers
Our light cotton jacquard is a particularly beautiful alternative to a completely smooth cotton fabric. The woven-in flowers give it a fine structure without making the fabric too conspicuous.
Especially with a classic shirt pattern, I find this contrast appealing: the clear shape of the shirt meets the delicate structure of the fabric. The result could be special, understated and elegant at the same time.

Textured viscose with elastane
Viscose is often associated with very soft, flowing fabrics – however, this deadstock viscose with 2% elastane is a bit different. It has more structure than classic viscose and only a slight stretch.
Precisely for this reason, I can imagine it very well for a shirt. It has enough body for typical shirt details to show nicely, while the small elastane content offers some extra freedom of movement and comfort when worn.
A good example of why not only the fiber composition is important when buying fabric, but also the weight, feel, drape and texture of the fabric.

Gingham check with jacquard hearts
This checked cotton fabric with woven jacquard hearts practically calls for a shirt.
The classic gingham check in blue, white and red gets a playful touch from the small hearts. Precisely this combination could work wonderfully as a classic shirt: familiar and versatile, yet a little different.
Depending on how it is combined, it could result in a casual everyday shirt or a somewhat dressier outfit.

More fabrics for blouses & shirts
These are just some of my current favorites. Basically, when looking for a fabric for a shirt, it's always worth looking at the specific pattern: How much body does the pattern need? Should the finished shirt be crisp and classic or soft and loose?
In my collection Fabrics for Blouses & Shirts you will find more fabrics that I have specifically selected because I would recommend them for shirts, shirt blouses and blouses.
And if you are unsure about a fabric, you can of course first order a fabric sample and look at and feel it at home in peace.
